Contents
Particular attention will be devoted to the chemistry of peptides, carbohydrates and their modified analogues. The main synthetic and purification strategies will be introduced, as well as the methodologies for studying the conformational aspects using spectroscopic techniques. Most of the approaches for the study of the interactions of macromolecules with their respective biological targets will be presented.
Reference texts
Handouts provided by the professor and published on Unistudium together with teaching material uploaded from time to time.
Educational objectives
At the end of the course the students will be able to deeply understand the structure and function of the main biological molecules and their ability to coordinate with each other in biological systems; in addition students will be able to apply the principles of synthetic chemistry to the preparation of biomolecules; understand the basic concepts of supramolecular assembly.
Prerequisites
Students must possess skills in the field of Organic Chemistry and Biochemistry in accordance with the year of the course attended.
Teaching methods
The course is based on theoretical lectures with examples of literature related to the most recent and advanced studies on the topic.
Learning verification modality
The exam consists of an oral test. Initially students will be invited to present a topic of their choice. Other questions can be asked to the candidate to complete the presentation. The final grade will be formulated by assessing the overall knowledge of the candidate for the subject.
Extended program

- Definition of peptidomimetic and classification
- Approaches for the development of peptidomimetics, conformational restrictions, use of non-natural amino acids
- Conformational analysis: circular dichroism, FT-IR, NMR.
- Chemistry of carbonyl compounds, aldehydes, ketones as functional groups characterizing sugars.
-Synthesis and purification of carbohydrates and their modified analogues.
-Methodologies for studying the conformational aspects using spectroscopic techniques.
- Techniques for studying the interactions of macromolecules with their respective biological targets and of macromolecules with each other, to give supramolecular complexes.
