- Discussion about the neurophisiology of pain, its clinical consequences, recognition of pain and pain treatment, with esemplification of clinical cases.
EXTENDED PROGRAM
Pain Etiopathogenesis: inflammatory pain, meuropathic pain, pain from unknown origins (3 h).Clinical consequences of pain (1 h).Pain recognition and evaluation: preventive diagnosis, clinical approach, use of pain scores (4 h). Principles of pain treatment: pain mechanism-based approach, preemptive and multimodal treatment, reasonf for antalgic therapy's failure (3 h).Clinical cases: application of therapeutic approach in various painful conditions of inflammatory acute (traumatic, surgical, medical), inflammatory persistent (i.e. OA, cancer) and neuropathic (i.e. neuropathies, amputation) pain (4 h). - Reference texts

- Educational objectives
- The main objective of the course is to provide students with the necessary knowledge for future application of correct diagnosis and analgesic treatment protocols in different painful situations that can affect the main animal species of veterinary interest.
- Prerequisites
- The knowledge of pharmacology is a prerequisite for the student who wants to follow the course with profit.
- Teaching methods
- The course is organized as follows:- Supervised discussions within small student's groups on the topics listed in the program.- Practical section with videos on the use of pain scales.
