Specific admission requirements

Formal Requirements Italian First cycle qualification (Laurea) or foreign equivalent in the same or related subject area, with possible extra work if required competences are lacking.

Evaluation of specific subject knowledge on entry

Access to the course is free, but it is necessary to verify in advance the possession of the curricular requirements. They are two: to have achieved at least 90 ECTS in specific scientific-disciplinary sectors listed in the Course Regulations and in the study manifesto in the previous three-year course; have obtained a degree mark of not less than 95/110. The verification is carried out by checking the degree certificate. If you meet the requirements, the President of the Course issues the authorization that allows the student to complete the enrollment in the CdS. In case of shortages of the credits indicated in the requested SSDs, the student must take these credits in the form of single courses within the deadline set for enrollments. If, on the other hand, the degree mark is lower than what is required, the student must take an oral fitness exam in one or more of the SSDs characterizing the course. Based on the outcome of this examination and following a careful evaluation of the career carried out, the Council will decide on admission. Finally, students who intend to enroll in the degree class in Archeology must certify that they have participated in at least 4 weeks of archaeological excavation. In case of lack of this requirement, they are required to fill it during the first year of enrollment in the course, participating in the excavations organized by the teachers of the Course. Foreign students are required to take a test to verify their proficiency of the Italian language, except Erasmus Incoming students, Exchange Students and students in mobility as per the Cooperation Agreement

Profile of the programme

The Course aims to provide advanced knowledge and skills in the areas of archeology and history of art. In particular, students deepen the issues concerning the conservation, promotion and use of cultural heritage, acquiring the professionalism to deal with the different problems inherent in this area in a specialized way. The course includes two degree classes: Archeology (LM-2) and History of Art (LM-89). At the time of enrollment, the student indicates the class within which he intends to achieve the degree. In any case, the student can change his choice, as long as it becomes definitive at the time of enrollment in the second year of the course. The teachings common to the two degree classes of the Course will provide the student with more in-depth knowledge (compared to the first level degree) regarding the scientific-disciplinary sectors characterizing such as archeology, history of art, history of art criticism and collecting, the history of restoration. In parallel, the student will further expand his cultural background by addressing topics of broad historical and geographical scope, also ranging outside the national territories (Archeology of the Near East, Archeology of the Roman provinces, History of comparative art of European countries, Systems and languages of contemporary art). In addition, students can access the Italy-France International Double Degree Program active with the Master in "Etudes italiennes et Histoire de l'Art - Archéologie Classique" at the University of Tours F. Rabelais, which allows them to and support first-year courses at the University of Perugia and second-year courses at the University of Tours.

Programme learning outcomes

The students of the Course acquire solid skills in the disciplines archaeological and historical-artistic, with particular regard to epistemological statutes and the articulation of the different theoretical interpretative frameworks. In addition, they acquire practical skills for participation in professional projects relating to the protection and enhancement of heritage archaeological and historical-artistic and possess the ability of overall analysis of historical-artistic phenomena, in relationship to the typology of the works and to the related monumental and environmental context and the advanced methodological skills regarding the documentation and processing of archaeological data, also gained through experience in the field. Such knowledge and skills are acquired acquired through: - lectures, seminars, stages, exercises in museums, excavation sites and other places of interest archaeological and historical-artistic; - written works; - participation in national and international conferences; - elaboration of the final test. The verification of acquired knowledge and understanding will be carried out by: - ongoing tests; - profit exams; - final test.

Qualification requirements and regulations

The student who achieves all the ECTS envisaged by the educational activities of the study plan is admitted to the final test, which must be taken in one of the courses in which the student has taken the exam during his entire university career. . The final test consists in the preparation of a written paper (about 70 folders of 2000 characters each and final devices) conducted under the guidance of a teacher-speaker, with whom the topic and the methods of compilation and organization of the material are agreed to be collected. In the preparation of the paper written, the student must demonstrate an adequate knowledge of the chosen subject, demonstrating that he / she has critical maturity and good written expression skills making use of the technical language of the discipline in which he / she graduates; he must also demonstrate his ability to conduct an original analysis around the research topic investigated, also thanks to the help of a large updated bibliography and first-hand material. The discussion of the written paper is public and takes place in front of a special commission made up of seven members appointed from among the professors serving at the University.

Examination regulations and grading scale

Assessment is normally an oral or written exam; in some cases there are intermediate exams during the course; other evaluation elements (seminars, reports, etc.) can be foreseen in specific course units and are described in the Course Unit Profiles. The grades for subject exams are measured in thirtieths (0-30 scale), the minimum grade is 18/30 and the maximum grade is 30/30. The maximum grade can be enhanced with “cum laude” (30 cum laude), in case of excellence. Grades are given by an exam commission of at least two teachers, whose President is the chair of the subject. The main exam sessions are held in January/February, March/April, June/July, September/October. Students may retake exams, if not passed. The University provides an ECTS Grading Table, which shows the actual distribution of the examination and final grades among students for each degree programme. The final degree evaluation is expressed in one hundred and tenths (0-110 scale), the minimum grade is 66/110 and the maximum grade is 110/110. The calculation of the final grade of each candidate takes into account the average of the grades obtained in the subject exams, as well as the quality of the work performed in research or in the final thesis which is discussed in public before an exam commission. “Cum laude” (110 cum laude) may be added to the maximum grade if the exam commission decides unanimously. In any case, the maximum score attributable to the final test is 7 points.

Obligatory or optional mobility windows

Erasmus exchanges concern first and second year students. The deadlines are in September (with departures from October) or in January (with departures from March). The periods of stay are flexible, and adaptable to the needs of the students: from a minimum of 3 months to a maximum of 12.

Work-based learning

The internship is an important training period in the student's experience. It can be done at Italian institutions, public and private, affiliated with the Dipartimento di Lettere, in particular located in Umbria (museums, superintendencies, art galleries, cultural associations, etc.), or abroad, at institutions with the which the Course has institutional relationships. Each internship credit corresponds to 25 hours of commitment. The internship is validated as part of the Additional training activities included in the study manifesto, which provide for a total of 6 ECTS. The activities are coordinated by the Department's Internship Office. After an initial orientation interview, the Office prepares the necessary documentation (it is available on the Department website). At the end of the activity, the trainee and the body that hosted him complete an evaluation questionnaire. As part of the internship, students of the Archeology curriculum are required to earn 6 ECTS by participating in archaeological excavation campaigns organized by the teachers of the Course.

Occupational profiles of graduates

The master's degree course in Archeology and History of Art prepares operators and researchers in the historical-artistic field capable of carrying out functions of high responsibility in specific institutions, such as museums and superintendencies (museum curators and conservators, inspectors), professional activities of specialist consultancy for sectors of the cultural industry and education in the knowledge of the historical-artistic heritage (art experts), directors and site managers of archaeological excavation, environmental impact assessment, protection experts in the field of programming territorial, promoters of events and economic activities related to the cultural tourism industry. The master's degree qualification is a necessary requirement for access to PhD courses and to schools of specialization in Archeology and History of art, also representing, according to current legislation, the necessary requirement for access to second level masters and further qualifying courses in schools.
